Pop Rocks Candy History
The original concept for Pop Rocks was developed in 1961, but it wasn’t released as a product until 1975. Pop Rocks are made by cooking sugar, corn syrup, water and flavoring, then cooling the mixture and cabonating it through pressuriziation. The carbonation forms tiny bubbles in the candy. This process is the reason why you can’t made Pop Rocks at home. Since the product was released in the 70’s, most people associate the product at being from the 70’s. But since it was also available in the 80’s and 90’s, many people feel it is nostalgic candy from those decades as well.
FAQ
Will eating Pop Rocks and drinking soda cause a persons stomach to explode?
This rumor has been busted. It was born on the false assumption that Pop Rocks contain an acid/base mixture. The rumor was tested on the very first Episode of MythBusters and it was found that a Pop Rocks package contains less carbonation than half a can of soda.
